Not really... shampoo and conditioner isn't what makes your layers more ';noticeable'; it's all in how you style it....
If you just wash your hair and don't do anything to style it, it's not going to look like much. You actually have to put in *some* kind of effort... even if it's just blow-drying it (use a little gel or mousse or other styling aids when it's still damp then blow it dry) Ask your stylist for other styling tips (if she/he was doing their job, they should have done that right away.)
